Together with Nina Beguš from the Berkeley Center for Science, Technology, Medicine, and Society, I have been awarded the Peder Sather Grant from the University of California, Berkeley. The project “NarrAItion” is being developed in collaboration with the Center for Digital Narrative at the University of Bergen and addresses the question of what it means when machines tell stories. We are investigating how AI-generated texts reflect, transform, or distort human narrative structures and what social, cultural, and ethical consequences these new forms of storytelling have.
At the same time, we have also received funding from the France-Berkeley Fund to work on the project “The Latent Spaces of Culture” together with our French colleagues Antonio Somaini (Sorbonne Nouvelle) and Alexandre Gefen (CNRS). It examines how the mathematical latent spaces on which AI models are based are changing cultural knowledge, visual culture, and the possibilities of writing. A workshop in Paris and an art exhibition in Berkeley are planned.
